2009 Heirloom Cameo Chardonnay

Heirloom Cameo is our barrel fermented Chardonnay. Or as Dena would explain it: “This wine wraps you in an elegant silk scarf and instantly makes you feel really good - about being you.”

The wine was fermented in a single large format French oak barrel or “puncheon.” The goal of this fermentation is to enhance the breadth and depth of the wine through contact with oak and extended yeast or “lees” aging. Ernie cut back the heaviness of the oak influence with a portion of our Stainless Steel fermented Chardonnay.

Stylistically, this wine is made to be enjoyed throughout its time in bottle. Upon release the wine is fresh with pungent aromas and a broad mouth feel, followed by a crisp and satisfying finish. We expect this wine to age gracefully for several years and will reward a laddered approach to monitoring its development.

The Chardonnay for this wine is estate grown in 2 small blocks. The blend is about two thirds Dijon clone 76 and the remaining one third is Dijon clone 95. These blocks were hand harvested on October 12th and thanks to a cold cellar, completed primary fermentation the following spring.

The Vintage: The 2009 vintage is revealing exceptionally aromatic and balanced wines. A very temperate growing season provided the typical vineyard events right on schedule. Our degree days came in at a very moderate to cool 2,072. Harvest was leisurely as we had little concern for rains or compromised fruit. Harvest began on October 5th and concluded with the Syrah and Viognier on the 22nd. Please follow this link to learn more about the vintage: http://www.amalierobert.com/Julian_calendar.htm

Tasting Notes: Understated pale yellow surprises with strong aromas of cherry orchard bloom, orange marmalade, cleaved pineapple, freshly cut Champagne mango, and Meyer lemon curd. The palate sensation is broad and textured with an expansive progression and delineated finish of crisp and echoing acidity. 80 cases produced.

Suggested Food pairings: This wine pairs well with pre-dinner thoughts. As some of those thoughts turn to food, we suggest Scottish style smoked salmon with fresh basil pesto, warm goat cheese and capers. The wine will also complement plank roasted Chinook salmon with fingerling potatoes and Brussels sprouts, and Chanterelle mushroom risotto with chicken thighs.

Wine & Spirits, October 2011 – Year’s Best Chardonnay article

A flinty scent of seashells enlivens golden delicious apple aromas in this lean, bequiling white. It has a voluptuous texture, with juicy pear flavors supported by a clean mineral line. That mineral foundation focuses it through long finish. For roast cod. 93 points.

It may be the best New World Chardonnay I have ever tasted!
