2008 Viognier
Viognier is the traditional white wine from Condrieu in the Northern Rhône valley of France. This variety develops beautiful and delicate aromatics with a rich unctuous mouth feel when grown in Oregon’s cool Willamette Valley. The wine was fermented at cool temperatures in a very small stainless steel fermenter to retain its delicate aromatics, and did not undergo malo-lactic fermentation. Viognier is not a wine that typically continues to develop once in bottle. This wine is at its peak within a year of the vintage. The Vintage: The 2008 vintage is another example of “patience pays” in the vineyard. The growing season was an extended and cool vintage accumulating only 1,930 degree days, but with one of the best September ripening periods on record. September is the key month for developing flavors and aromatics in the berries. Rainfall was typical with just a little shot of rain at the first of October. This is Mother Nature’s way of extending the growing season and to put her finishing touches on our vines. We began harvest on October 11th and concluded on October 30th with the Syrah and Viognier. Tasting Notes: The bouquet opens with intense honeysuckle, passion fruit, yellow citrus and fresh ginger. The wine is rich and coating on the palate with a mélange of tropical fruits and spice. The finish is laser focused and unyielding, providing balanced acidity and due heft. 17 cases produced. Suggested Food pairings: We enjoy chilled Viognier as an aperitif in the afternoon or paired with seafood appetizers. The 2008 Viognier is a substantial wine and is also very complimentary with fall squash stuffed whole wheat pasta in a rich Alfredo garlic sauce, accented with a sprig of fennel and a few capers. Hmmm Yummy!
