2003 Wadenswil Clone Pinot Noir

The pinot Noir for this bottling expresses a single clone grafted onto a single rootstock and sourced exclusively from block 15. The Wadenswil clone was one of the first Pinot Noir clones to be planted in the Willamette Valley during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Oregon’s reputation for producing excellent Pinot Noir is partly due to choosing the right planting material over 40 years ago. This wine is a tribute to the Wadenswil clone and those early pioneers who planted it.

The location of Block 15, combined with the 2003 growing conditions, provided completely ripe and fully mature, healthy fruit. Block 15 has a south to southwest aspect, with an elevation from 300 to 350 feet. The yield was less than one ton per acre.

One indicator of berry ripeness is seed color. As seeds ripen, they turn from green to brown and, more importantly, impart less astringency in the wine. The seeds in 2003 looked like Grape Nuts. The resulting full bodied wine is true to the season and our site’s terroir.

Beautifully perfumed aromatics are a signature of the Wadenswil clone, and this wine entertains them wonderfully. The wine has poise and great structure. The mid-palate highlights the dark fruits and juicy plums. The final sensation is a long, lingering richness. Enjoy this wine with roast duck, lamb with Herbs de Provence and venison.
